The next stop on our ‘Holiday Here This Year Summer Road Trip’ series is the beautiful Western Australia. With over 2.5 million square kilometres of land to explore, WA has so much to offer.
We’ve asked our friends Theresa and Ben Schlink from Caravan of Conservation for their ultimate Western Australia road trip. As full time caravanners, the Schlink family have travelled around Australia twice so you can rest assured they know the lay of the land.
Get ready to experience the incredible sights and outdoor activities that are on offer. The land is your playground!
Day 1 – Perth to Jurien Bay
Begin your road trip from Perth, voyaging 218 kms to Jurien Bay. On the way, be sure to stop at The Pinnacles to explore the mind-blowing ancient rock formations. Once you’ve reached Jurien Bay, go for a walk along the pristine white sandy beach with crystal clear waters – popular for snorkelling and swimming. You may even get a close encounter with the local friendly sea lions!
Day 2 – Jurien Bay to Geraldton
Your next destination will take you 196 kms along the coast to Geraldton. Before your arrival, stop at Leaning Tree in Greenough – you won’t be disappointed. While in Geraldton, grab some fish n’ chips then burn off some energy at the brilliant foreshore; it features a splash park, basketball courts, epic playgrounds and endless space for scooters.
Top up your groceries whilst you’re here as it’s the last big supermarket for the trip. Lastly, don’t forget to catch a sunset at Sunset Beach as this makes for a beautiful evening.
Day 3 – Geraldton to Kalbarri
Continuing along the coastline will take you 156 kms up to Kalbarri. About 35 minutes out of Kalbarri, take the opportunity to stop at Hutt Lagoon and see the bubble gum colours of the pink lake. Theresa and Ben recommend setting up camp for two nights in this resort town so you can experience all what it has to offer. Kalbarri has some beautiful sights, a favourite being the famous Natures Window in Kalbarri National Park.
During your stay you will also love the many spectacular hikes; particularly with the newly built Sky Walk where you can take in the views with a cuppa. You can also take a walk along the coastal cliffs and if you’re lucky, may even spot some whales! The beaches in Kalbarri bring a sense of awe at their rugged and untouched presence.
Day 4 – Kalbarri
Take advantage of today to explore anything you missed yesterday in Kalbarri National Park.
Day 5 – Kalbarri to Monkey Mia
After a couple days spent in Kalbarri, pack up for a 398 km drive to Monkey Mia. Stop at Hamelin Pool to explore the 3.5 billion-year-old Stromatolites; a natural phenomenon and the biggest known colony on earth (one of two places in the world). Then, just up from Hamelin Pool, call into Shell Beach – a 60 km stretch of beach covered in shells to a depth of 7-10 metres. Next, take one more stop at Denham for lunch and explore the new foreshore adventure playground, whilst taking in the beautiful colours of the bay!
Monkey Mia has had a recent refurbishment with some of the best campground facilities Theresa and Ben have come across. This means, state of the art kitchens, eating areas and enormous flat screen TVs for creating the perfect welcome meal to celebrate your arrival to paradise! If you’re lucky enough to have snagged a waterfront site, then you can enjoy front row seats watching the famous Monkey Mia dolphins herding fish to shore for dinner.
Day 6 – Monkey Mia
Wake up early for a memorable sunrise where the water is like glass and the ocean blends with the sky. Ensure you get in early to secure a spot in the Dolphin Encounter. If you’re lucky, you may be chosen to feed one of them. This is a beautiful experience to see the dolphins wild and free.
There are endless possibilities for fun at this beautiful resort with a huge swimming pool, kids’ playground, roaming emus, kayaking, restaurants, fishing and sunset cruises! While you’re here, 4×4’s can drive out to Francois Peron National Park to see the red dirt meet the ocean. Lastly, don’t forget to drop into Little Lagoon on the way into Denham for some miraculous views.
Day 7 – Home time!
After a week of road tripping adventures set out for the journey back home.
